| Land of Legends |
|
French Brittany is a land of wind, stones, forests, ocean and legends. It has a long history and a culture defined by the elements, popular myths, and religion. In the Neolithic period it was the center of ancient megalithic constructions that remain untill nowadays; some people still believe this is the country of fairies, sprites and other trolls. The Christianization, which occurred in the roman period, had to coexist at first with the local Celtic culture and religion. Then little by little and sometimes violently the Christian religion established it self in Brittany and since the 19th century at least, Brittany has been known as the one of the most devoutly catholic regions in France. Some tradition and customs from the old Celtic religion have also been preserved in Brittany and its most powerful folk figure remains “l'Ankou” or the “reaper of death”.
